Some Lesser Known Facts About V.K. Ebrahim Kunju
- V.K. Ebrahim Kunju was born and grew up in Kongorpilly, Aluva.
- He was a prominent figure in Kerala’s politics for more than four decades.
- V K Ebrahim Kunju gradually rose through the organization’s ranks and eventually became a main leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Ernakulam, serving as its general secretary for 25 years and later as president.
- Before entering politics, V.K. Ebrahim served as the chairman and chief executive of Forest Industries (Travancore) Ltd., a government-owned wooden furniture manufacturing company.
- Kunju entered politics through the Muslim Students Federation and the Muslim Youth League.
- His legislative career included four terms in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He was first elected in 2001 from Mattancherry and won again from the same constituency in 2006. After constituency delimitation, he contested from Kalamassery and won the elections in 2011 and 2016.
- V K Kunju was the last MLA elected from Mattancherry before the constituency was dissolved, and the first MLA elected from the new Kalamassery seat after delimitation.
- On 4 January 2005, following the resignation of Muslim League leader P.K. Kunhalikutty in connection with the ice cream parlour sex scandal, V. K. Ebrahim Kunju was chosen to represent the party within the UDF cabinet.
- From 23 May 2011 to 20 May 2016, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju became the Minister for Public Works under the Oommen Chandy ministry. During his tenure as PWD minister, 227 bridges worth Rs. 1600 crore were built across Kerala, and a number of State Highways were also constructed.

- Apart from his legislative role, V. K. Ebrahim Kunju held several key positions in education, labour unions, and public organisations in Kerala. He served as Vice President of the Kerala Muslim Educational Association (KMEA), Chairman of C. H. Mohammed Koya College of Engineering and Technology, Edathala, and Secretary of Al Manar Public School. He was a senior leader of the Swathanthra Thozhilali Union (STU) and held chairperson or leadership roles in several workers’ and employees’ unions across Kerala. He also served as a Syndicate Member of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), was an Executive Committee member of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA), and became Chairman of the Committee on Government Assurances in 2019.
- Ebrahim Kunju held several positions within the IUML, along with state vice-president. He played a significant role in expanding the party’s influence beyond its traditional stronghold of Malappuram. Kunju led the party’s efforts in Ernakulam and effectively managed challenges in the central districts. He was regarded as close to the Thangal family in Panakkad, the spiritual heart of the party.
- In November 2020, V.K. Ebrahim was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and underwent chemotherapy.
- On 4 January 2026, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. Unfortunately, he breathed his last on 6 January 2026.
- Before his death, he had been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.
- V.K. Ebrahim Kunju is survived by his wife and three sons.
