  • Muhoozi Kainerugaba was born in a Christian family in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. At the time of his birth, his parents were living in exile because of the political climate in their home country.

  • He is the eldest child of his parents.
  • In an interview, Muhoozi shared that he was given the name Kainerugaba in honour of his mother’s brother, Henry Kainerugaba.
  • Muhoozi did his elementary education in Tanzania.
  • While in Tanzania, his father, Yoweri Museveni, was actively involved in efforts to remove Uganda’s president at the time, the dictator Idi Amin. After Amin was removed in 1979, Kainerugaba, his mother, and his siblings moved to Uganda for only a couple of years.
  • In 1981, due to political tension Muhoozi, his mother and his siblings, flee to Kenya to live in exile. In 1982, they move to Sweden.
  • In 1986, his family returned to Uganda after his father became president of Uganda. Because of the family’s journeys, Kainerugaba attended schools in multiple countries during his childhood.
  • During his secondary school, Muhoozi became born-again (spiritual rebirth).
  • After graduating in 1994, Kainerugaba enrolled to the Egyptian Military Academy, Egypt, where he took both the company and battalion commanders’ courses.
  • Muhoozi also attended Kalama Armoured Warfare Training School, Uganda.
  • In 2008, he completed one year course in military command at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
  • After that, he completed the Executive National Security Programme at the South African National Defence College.

  • In 2000, he joined the British Army’s officer training school, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
  • In 2001, he was promoted to second lieutenant in the UPDF.
  • From 2008 to 2017, he served as Commander in the Strategic Forces Command. The post he served again from 2020 to 2021.
  • Due to his role as commander of the SFC, Kainerugaba was named in a complaint in abductions of Ugandan citizens and Human rights abuses to the International Criminal Court (ICC)
  • In September 2011, Muhoozi Kainerugaba was promoted to Colonel.
  • In 2009, Muhoozi participated in training and commissioning the UPDF’s first paratrooper element, that was Uganda’s first paratroopers since 1976.
  • In the early 2012, he joined an Executive National Security Program at the South Africa’s National Defence College.
  • In August 2012 Muhoozi was promoted to Brigadier General.
  • For years, many people suspected that his father, Yoweri Museveni groomed him to succeed him as president of Uganda. In 2013, these suspicions were further fuelled, when a high-ranking military officer alleged that there was a secret “Muhoozi project,” which actively worked toward having Kainerugaba succeed his father when he finally stepped down, as well as to assassinate those who objected to the plan. The Ugandan government and Kainerugaba both denied this allegation.
  • From 2013 to 2014, Muhoozi was one of the key senior UPDF commanders who deployed to South Sudan to support the Government of South Sudan after fighting broke out in Juba between rival factions of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SPLA).
  • From 2017 to 2020, he served as the Senior Presidential Advisor for special operations.
  • In February 2019, his father, Yoweri Museveni, promoted him to the rank of lieutenant-general.
  • During Uganda’s 2020 election, Kainerugaba was one of several military officers or government officials who were accused of having committed human rights violations, when he was serving as head of the special forces command.
  • In December 2020, after being re-appointed SFC commander, Muhoozi posted several tweets, where he attacked Ugandan politician, Bobi Wine. Many Ugandans considered these tweets to promote tribalism, and after receiving many negative reactions, he later, removed the tweets.
  • After his father’s re-election in 2021, Kainerugaba became open about his wish to claim the presidency.
  • In June 2021 Muhoozi was appointed as Commander of the UPDF’s Infantry branch.
  • In 2022, his supporters formed MK movement and started organizing events and community projects to back him for the presidency role.
  • In February 2022, Muhoozi showed his support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In his tweet, he praised Russian President Vladimir Putin. He wrote,

Russian President Vladimir Putin is absolutely right!”

  • In March 2022, Kainerugaba posted on X that, he was retiring from his military services.
  • In May 2022, Muhoozi praised US President Donald Trump. On X, he wrote,

Only white man I have ever respected.”

  • In October 2022, he posted many controversial tweets, including threat to invade Kenya and to capture its capital, Nairobi. Because of these tweets, his father removed him from his military post. However, later, he promoted Kainerugaba to General and as a senior presidential adviser.
  • In March 2023 Kainerugaba announced in a tweet that he would run in the 2026 presidential election. However, he deleted the tweet quickly.
  • In February 2024, he tranformed MK Movement into the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), which aimed to work towards reviving a spirit of good citizenship, national pride, national service, protection of vulnerable persons, dealing corruption and mismanagement of public resources, and environmental protection in Uganda.
  • In March 2024, his father appointed him as the head of the UPDF, that sparked his presidency succession rumours in Uganda.
  • In September 2024, Kainerugaba posted on X that he would not stand for president in the 2026 election and instead he would support his father for a seventh term as president.
  • In April 2026, Muhoozi Kainerugaba came into news after one of his tweet went viral in which he demanded 1 billion dollars from Turkey and the “most beautiful woman in the country” as his wife. He threatened if his demands are not fullfilled, Uganda would cut diplomatic ties with Turkey with in 30 days.
  • Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a religious person. He is a member of the Anglican Church of Uganda.
