The Ibu volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted today, spewing a column of ash up to 3.5 km above the crater, authorities said, quoted by Agence France-Presse.

The eruption, which began at 12:37 a.m. local time, lasted more than three minutes, an official at a checkpoint near the volcano in the northern Moluccas said in a statement today.

“We ask residents and tourists in the vicinity of the Ibu volcano not to carry out any activities within a radius of two kilometers (around the crater),” the official added.

The alert level declared after the eruption of the volcano at an altitude of 1,325 meters remains the second on a four-level scale. No evacuations were ordered after the eruption.

However, the authorities urged the public to wear masks and goggles when going outside to protect themselves from falling volcanic ash.

The Indonesian archipelago is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” – an area of intense volcanic activity.

In the middle of the month, the Ruang volcano in the north of the country also erupted and thousands of local residents were evacuated. And Manado International Airport, located more than 100 kilometers from this crater, remained closed for several days.
