• After completing his graduation from Anna University in India, S. Somasegar received an offer to work as a research scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

• However, he rejected the offer and moved from India to the US, where he completed his master’s degree in Computer Engineering at Louisiana State University (LSU).

• In January 1989, S. Somasegar started working as a Corporate Vice President at Microsoft in Seattle, Washington.

• During his stint at Microsoft, he served as a leader of the team that made Visual Studio and other .NET products.

• These products were used by tens of millions of developers to build applications and services for personal computers, servers, phones, and the cloud.

• S. Somasegar had also managed the research labs of Microsoft in Boston, China, India, and Israel.

• In 1998, he founded the Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC) in Hyderabad. After that, MSIDC became one of the largest engineering hubs of Microsoft outside the United States.

• S. Somasegar had served as an active angel and seed investor in various consumer technology companies and enterprises in the U.S. and around the world. He used to put early-stage money into these companies.

• In September 2024, he was appointed as a Member Board of Directors at UiPath in New York, United States.

• In November 2015, S. Somasegar started working as a Managing Director at Madrona in Seattle. Madrona is a venture capital firm that invests in technology start-ups.

• During this period, he served in the crucial investment areas of the company, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, next generation cloud infrastructure, and intelligence applications.

• Anna University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, had honoured S. Somasegar with a doctorate for his achievements in the field of Computer Science and Technology.

• He had worked as a volunteer to help and educate girls all across the world.

• S. Somasegar, along his wife, often supported the programs that improved the education and empowerment of women.

• He was a partner in the Seattle Sounders Football Club and the Seattle Orcas, a Major League Cricket team, which was formed in 2023.

• On 19 May 2026, his employer company Madrona announced his passing away in a media statement. It wrote
  

  We are heartbroken to share that our dear friend and colleague Soma Somasegar passed away unexpectedly earlier today.”

• Before his death, it was announced that S. Somasegar was named in the “SEED 100” list. He was recognised as a top early-stage technology investors of 2026.

• He liked travelling to distant places and playing table tennis in his free time.
