Soccer, Xabi Alonso | Confirmed: Xabi Alonso will stay at Bayer Leverkusen

On Thursday evening, several English newspapers reported that Liverpool had given up on Xabi Alonso, and that they would rather shift their focus to other names.

On Friday, Alonso confirms at a press conference that he will remain at the German club Bayer Leverkusen.

– After much speculation about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place to be for me, says Alonso.

– I am still a young coach, but I think this is the best decision for my future. I spent time on the decision and am sure it is the right one.

In addition to having been the favorite to take over for Klopp at Liverpool, Alonso has also been linked with the coaching job at Bayern Munich.

Recently, several media outlets have reported that Bayern and Liverpool have been fighting for Alonso.

Now it is the German league leader Bayer Leverkusen who gets to keep the successful coach next season as well. The club is on its way to its first league gold ever.

Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga every year since 2011/12. Then it was Jürgen Klopp who could lift the trophy with Borussia Dortmund.

Despite Alonso coaching Leverkusen next season, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that he has a buyout clause in 2025.

In addition to Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Romano claims that Real Madrid are also following Alonso as a potential coach in the future. The Spaniard has played in all the clubs during his career.
