Some Lesser Known Facts About K. R. Periyakaruppan

• K. R. Periyakaruppan was born and raised in Sivagangai region of Tamil Nadu. He brought up in a rural background.

• Before joining politics, he started his professional career in agriculture and other local business like dairy farming and aqua farming.

• In 1990, he joined politics as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s member and started working at the grassroots level.

• During that time, he worked on strengthening the position of DMK in Sivagangai district.

• In the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, Periyakaruppan was elected as MLA on the DMK ticket from Tiruppattur constituency.

• He was also appointed as the Minister of Hindu Charities and Rural Development, Tamil Nadu in M. Karunanidhi‘s cabinet.

• In the 2011 and 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, he was re-elected from Tiruppattur constituency as MLA on the DMK ticket.

• In 2021, he contested again Tirupattur constitunecy for the 16th Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu election as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate. He defeated Marudhu Alaguraj of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) by a margin of 37,374 votes.

• After his win, he was appointed as the Minister for Rural Development (Rural Development, Panchayats and Panchayat Unions, Poverty Alleviation Schemes, Rural Credit) in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet.

• On 14 December 2022, he was appointed as the Minister of Co-operatives in M. K Stalin‘s cabinet.

• In 2026, K. R. Periyakaruppan lost the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election from Tirupattur constitunecy by just one vote to actor turned politician Vijay‘s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s candidate Srinivasa Sethupathi. In the election Sethupathy received a total of 83375 votes and K. R. Periyakaruppan fell just one vote short.
