Some Lesser Known Facts About Abhay Mokashi

• Abhay Mokashi built his reputation as a senior political journalist and later also became a journalism professor, known for reporting and teaching.

• During his career, one of his biggest investigations was into a marks tempering case involving the daughter of then Maharashtra Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar, Chandrakala, who was a gynaecology PhD student.

• Abhay found out that Chandrakala’s marks had been changed from fail (F-minus) to pass (F-plus) in her postgraduate gynaecology exam at Seth GS Medical College, KEM Hospital.

• Abhay’s report on the marks tempering case created a strong political pressure. In March 1986, his reports resulted major consequences, leading Chief Minister Nilangekar resign.

• Nilangekar, who took the office in June 1985, ended up serving only 277 days, becoming one of the shortest-serving chief ministers.

• Abhay Mokashi later worked as political editor at Mid-Day and also wrote as a columnist for The Free Press Journal.

• Apart from being a journalist, Abhay was also a teacher. He taught at various institutions, incluing Harkisan Mehta Foundation Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication (HMFIJMA), Mumbai and Xavier Institute of Communications (XIC), Mumbai.

• According to his former colleagues, he was fond of classical music and kitchen gardening.

• Abhay Mokashi passed away in Mumbai on 2 May 2026. He had been battling with terminal-stage stomach cancer and non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver for a month.

• His wife had passed away a few years back due to an illness caused by pigeons.

• Abhay’s cremation was held at the electric crematorium in Borivali Mumbai on 3 May 2026. The day also marked his 69th birthday.
