The tragedy was confirmed by a statement his team, Winsford United FC, put on X on Sunday. The team has announced that their Easter Monday matchup against Barnton, their neighbours, will however go ahead. The Cheshire-based ninth-tier football team released the following statement:

It’s with deep sadness that we have to announce that our player Ross Aikenhead has sadly passed away.

The club further stated:

Ross was a fantastic young man and a terrific footballer. He will be sorely missed by everyone associated with the club, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Ross’s family and friends. RIP Ross.”

Wythenshawe Town, his previous team from when he was a young player and played for them early in the season, also sent their condolences. They said that, in his honour, there would be a minute of applause prior to their game on Easter Monday.

Ross’s demise shocked former teammates and according to them, he was among the “nicest lads on and off the pitch” and was a man they remembered as being “polite and friendly”.
