Who is Lucy Clark transgender manager of Sutton United’s women football team

Here is all you need to know about transgender football manager Lucy Clark as JK Rowling seemingly takes a dig at the Sutton United’s manager

J.K. Rowling, the author, has come under criticism for mocking the first ever openly transgender football manager by equating her with a “straight, white, middle-aged bloke,” as she took over her X account replying to an account of LGBTQ+ charity Pride.

Pride posted a photo of the official holding a red card and her trademark pink whistle, her long brown hair falling over her shoulders. They captioned it:

Lucy Clark, the world’s first openly transgender referee, has made history by becoming the first trans manager in the top 5 divisions of English women’s football. The former referee has taken over at Sutton United. FABULOUS!”

However, fans and the users took the help of social media to defend the manager. The Harry Potter writer further tweeted, “Calling a man a man is not ‘bullying’.”

Clark’s side, United is six points above the relegation zone in the 12-team league table, ranked ninth. Let us have a look at who Lucy is.

Who is Lucy Clark?

Lucy Clark is Sutton United’s head coach who made history to become the first transgender manager in football in the top five leagues of the women’s category in England.

In addition to coaching non-league men’s teams in Essex, Clark coached her first team at the age of sixteen and holds a UEFA B coaching licence, according to the BBC.

In the top five levels of English Women’s Football, the transgender referee is the first trans manager. In January, Sutton United named the former referee as their women’s team manager.

Clark has experience coaching men’s non-league teams in Essex, thus Clark is no stranger to management. Clark’s appointment is meant to keep Sutton from being demoted and to keep them in the London & South Regional Women’s Premier Division.

Being a huge follower of Sutton for a lifetime, Clark has previously refereed women’s games at the third division, making Lucy the first trans referee in football history. The 51-year-old, though, was excited to start a new job in the dugout.
