Jean-Philippe Mateta is a French football player who was born on June 28, 1997, in Sevran, France and the 26-year-old striker stands 1.92 m (6 ft 4 in) tall. He is single and unmarried.

A look at Jean-Philippe Mateta’s career so far 

Jean-Philippe Mateta currently plays striker for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Internationally, he has represented France at the U19 and U21 youth levels. 

Mateta has had a fantastic season since joining Palace from the German team Mainz a few seasons back. After initially vying for playing time with Odsonne Edouard, he has taken advantage of Oliver Glasner’s opportunities. 

Ahead of joining Lyon of Ligue 1 in 2016, he began his career at Chateauroux. Following a successful loan at Le Havre, a team in the second tier, he signed with Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga in 2018. In 2021, he joined Crystal Palace. 

In September 2016, Mateta sealed a five-year contract worth deal an estimated €2 million, plus a further €3 million in bonuses, with Ligue 1 team Lyon, after leaving Chateauroux. He made his Ligue 1 debut on September 21, 2016, coming in for Maxwel Cornet in the 76th minute of the team’s 5-1 victory at home.

The striker went on loan to the Ligue 2 team Le Havre for the whole season. In 37 games during the 2017–18 Ligue 2 season, he scored 19 goals. He sealed a four-year deal with 1. FSV Mainz 05, a Bundesliga team, on June 29, 2018. The French international became the club’s most expensive acquisition at that time when he was bought. 

Mateta scored his first hat-trick as a senior on April 5, 2019, in a 5-0 league victory over SC Freiburg. He later joined Crystal Palace in 2021. For a further €15 million, Mateta’s permanent signing option was secured, and the team allegedly paid a €3 million loan fee. Meanwhile, the forward is reported to exit this month. 

Who are Jean-Philippe Mateta’s parents?

Jean-Philippe Mateta was born to a French mother and a Congolese father who is a former professional footballer for Congo and in Liege, Belgium. 

He was born in Sevran, a suburb of Paris, the youngest of seven siblings. Mateta’s father left his family at 22 in order to pursue his footballing career, moving to Liege in Belgium and would go on to represent Congo at international level.

Jean-Philippe Mateta had signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Crystal Palace, committing his services to the club until June 2026. His salary for this year is reported to be around £2,600,000 as per Capology
