Adi Hütter bio

Adolf “Adi” Hütter is an Austrian professional football coach and former player who was born on February 11, 1970, in Hohenems, Austria. Interestingly, it was Hütter’s grandmother who persuaded his parents to name their son Adolf in memory of his uncle, who died at the young age of 27 from a rock avalanche. However, he often goes by the nickname “Adi”. Adi is currently working as the head coach and manager of Ligue 1 club Monaco. Prior to becoming a coach, he was a professional footballer who played as a midfielder.

Adi is paid a monthly salary of 250,000 euros and the 54-year-old Austrian signed a contract for two seasons till the 30th of June, 2025.

Player career

Hütter spent his entire career as a player in his native country, primarily playing as a central midfielder. He made his first-team debut at Grazer AK back in 1988, with whom he won the Austrian Cup. He later played for SV Austria Salzburg, now called Red Bull Salzburg, where he won the Austrian championship three times and reached the 1993–94 UEFA Cup final. Adi Hütter last played for the Red Bull Juniors in 2007 after retiring due to a persistent Achilles injury.

Coaching career

Immediately after his retirement, Adi Hütter took up a job as an assistant coach for first-team boss Lars Sondergaard at Red Bull Juniors.  After working on various coaching roles, he finally got his new role as a first-team coach at Red Bull Salzburg in 2014/15, with whom he won the Austrian title. Following his success, he moved to Switzerland to take charge of Young Boys in the Swiss capital, Berne. There, he led YB to the Swiss title for the first time in 32 years in 2017/18 after two runners-up finishes.

Notably, the win marked an end to Basel’s eight successive titles, and marked the start of the Young Boys’ five title wins in the next six seasons of the Swiss league. Following his success at YB, Adi Hütter succeeded, Niko Kovac, at Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of the 2018–19 season.

He later took up a role at German club Borussia Mönchengladbach till the 2021/22 season. Following which, he led the team through the Europa League group stage unbeaten, becoming the first German club ever to do so in the process. He finally joined his current club, Monaco, on July 4, 2023, who are currently placed second on the Ligue 1 table.

Adi Hütter coaching style

Interestingly, Adi Hütter was all about possession during his playing days, and preferred seeing nice football back to front. However, as a coach, he eventually started to prefer a much more dynamic, and direct style. He explained how he no longer likes “to play the ball around with horizontal passes in our own half.”

Aside from a direct play style, good communication with his players is everything for Hütter. Hütter can speak multiple languages and during his time at Frankfurt, he shared how he was jealous of former Rennes man and Switzerland international Gelson Fernandes’s language skills. He stated:

I would have liked to have been Gelson Fernandes, I’m even a little bit jealous. I’m impressed by how many languages he speaks; he can talk to anyone. I think that’s brilliant.”
