Know the ICC eligibility criteria, which allowed former New Zealand cricketer Corey Anderson to represent United States in the upcoming USA vs Canada T20I series despite his nationality not being American

Renowned former New Zealand cricketer Corey Anderson is on the brink of making his debut for the United States, as he joins the 15-member squad set to compete in the upcoming T20I series against Canada, commencing on Sunday, April 7. This series holds significant importance as a crucial warm-up for the impending T20 World Cup later this year, where the USA is preparing for its maiden appearance, alongside co-hosts, the West Indies.

What is the nationality of Corey Anderson and how is he playing cricket for USA

Corey Anderson who was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and is a Kiwi by nationality is known for his illustrious cricketing career spanning 13 Test matches, 49 ODIs, and 31 T20Is for New Zealand. He has now shifted his focus to the USA to pursue league cricket. His relocation in 2020 marked a significant juncture, rendering him eligible to represent the country in 2023 after showcasing his prowess in domestic cricket.

Why Corey Anderson is eligible to represent USA?

In contrast, Unmukt Chand, erstwhile captain of the India U-19 team, has missed out on securing a berth in the US squad. Chand made the move to the USA in 2021 following his selection for Minor League Cricket (MiLC), where he impressively notched up 1500 runs in 45 innings, standing as the second-highest run-scorer in the competition’s history.

Despite his tenure with the Los Angeles Knight Riders during the inaugural season of Major League Cricket last year, Chand didn’t meet the criteria for national team selection. According to ICC regulations, a player seeking eligibility for an Associate or Affiliate Member team must not have participated in an international match for any other National Cricket Federation in the preceding four years.

However, this timeframe can be shortened to two years if the player is returning to represent the Associate or Affiliate Member they originally played for before joining a Full Member. Accompanying Anderson in the USA squad are former India U-19 player Harmeet Singh and seasoned campaigners such as Milind Kumar, both of whom meet the eligibility criteria and have been chosen for the upcoming five-match series against Canada.
