- Uma Kumaran was born to Sri Lankan Tamil refugee parents. Her parents fled Sri Lanka during the Sri Lankan Civil War.

- In an interview, Uma revealed that Labour Party MP Jeremy Corbyn helped their parents with their immigration.
- She was born in East London. Later, her family moved to Harrow, where Uma completed her schooling.
- In 2004, she enrolled at Queen Mary University of London, Mile End, where she completed he bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
- In December 2007, after completing her bachelor’s degree, Uma started her professional career with a health and care organisation, NHS Professionals. She has worked there till January 2009.
- From March 2008 to August 2010, she worked with Labour MP Dawn Butler as a parliamentary researcher and caseworker.
- In the 2010 local election, Uma Kumaran unsuccessfully contested as a Labour Party candidate from the London Borough of Harrow.
- In September 2010, Uma worked for the Labour Group on Islington Council. She has worked there till December 2014.
- In November 2013, Kumaran was re-selected as a Labour Party candidate for Harrow East. However, she could not win this time either.

She served there till May 2024.
- In May 2024, Uma Kumaran was elected as a Member of Parliament as a Labour Party candidate in the newly created constituency of Stratford and Bow.

- In October 2024, Kumaran was elected as a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.
- In December 2024, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed her as the United Kingdom’s delegation to the UK-EU Parliamentary Partnership Assembly.

- In March 2026, Uma came into the news after she accused Conservative MP Nick Timothy of making a comment on a mass muslim prayer held during a public iftar in Trafalgar Square, London. On X, he wrote,
Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan – which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger – is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination.”
