On February 15, the Baku Court of Appeal heard an appeal against the sentence of activist Samir Ashurov, who was arrested after being deported from Germany.
On December 18 of last year, the Baku Serious Crimes Court found him guilty under articles 126.2 (deliberately causing serious harm to health due to hooliganism) and 221.3 (hooliganism committed by using a weapon or an object used as a weapon) of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to 6.5 years in prison. deprived.
The defense appealed the verdict and asked for Ashurov’s acquittal. However, the Court of Appeal upheld the verdict and rejected the appeal.
Currently, the defense side intends to file a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court.
In his last words, Ashurov said that he did not commit the crime he was charged with.
On July 21, 2022, Ashurov was charged with another article of the Criminal Code – 221.3 (committing hooliganism by using weapons or items used as weapons).

In 2014, an agreement was signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the European Union on the readmission of persons living without permission. Since the signing of the agreement, the readmission of 2013 people has already taken place and the readmission of 2147 more people is expected. The State Migration Service reports that 39 of the 420 persons readmitted to the country in 2021 were returned from Germany.
Five activists readmitted to Azerbaijan from Germany in October 2022 – Mutallim Orujov, Malik Rzayev, Punhan Karimli, Jafar Mirzayev and Samur Ashurov were arrested for various reasons. However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs denies the allegations that those readmitted from Germany were arrested on political orders.
