Cole Palmer continued to impress in his debut season for the Blues, breaking the deadlock with a delightful flicked header in the first half.

Marc Cucurella, formerly of Brighton, provided an equally stellar assist, delivering one of his standout performances of the season. Christopher Nkunku, returning from injury, wasted no time in making his mark as a substitute.

The Frenchman sealed the win with a composed finish, courtesy of a precise cross from compatriot Malo Gusto.

However, chaos ensued in the 86th minute when Chelsea’s captain Reece James was shown a straight red card for an altercation with Joao Pedro, following a lengthy VAR review.

Despite the setback and with 10 minutes of added time, Brighton intensified their attack, leading to Danny Welbeck’s late goal in the 97th minute.

Despite James’ indiscretion causing discomfort, Chelsea managed to secure the win, albeit nervously. Thanks to their superior goal difference, European football next season seems all but assured for the Blues.

Over the past year, Nkunku has become famous for pulling a red or blue balloon out of his sock after scoring a goal. He then blows it up, usually with his head tilted back and his arms outstretched wide.

Nkunku first celebrated with a balloon in his mouth after scoring in a 4-0 Champions League win against Shakhtar Donetsk in November.
