- Chandrima Bhattacharya was born and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal.
- In 1972 she completed her B.Com degree and in 1976 she earned her LL.B degree from the University of Calcutta.
- After completing her studies, Bhattacharya worked as a practicing advocate at the Calcutta High Court for more than three decades before entering full-time politics.
- During her legal career, she mainly handled civil and constitutional law cases.
- In 2002, Chandrima Bhattacharya joined politics and became the president of the Congress women’s wing in West Bengal.
- She also served as the South Kolkata district Congress general secretary. Additionally, she was a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
- In 2008, Chandrima Bhattacharya resigned from Indian National Congress.
- During the 2007 Singur and Nandigram movements in West Bengal, Chandrima became close to Mamata Banerjee.
- In 2009, she joined Mamata Banerjee led All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and later became an important leader in the party’s women wing.

- In November 2021, after a cabinet reshuffle, Chandrima Bhattacharya received the Finance department as Minister of State.
- She was also given the additional responsibilities in Health and Family Welfare, Land and Land Reforms, and Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation departments.
- In March 2022, Chandrima was given the independent charge of the Finance Department.
- In May 2026, she contested again for the Assembly seat from Dum Dum Uttar constituency; however, she lost the election to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Sourav Sikday by a margin of 26,404 votes.

- In June 2026, Chandrima Bhattacharya was appointed as the West Bengal state president of Trinamool Congress.
- On 4 July 2026, she resigned from all posts in Trinamool Congress, including her position as West Bengal State president.
- In her resignation, she wrote,
I hereby tender my resignation from the post of state president of All India Trinamool Congress, which had been conferred on me in the meeting at Kalighat on 03.06.2026. I also hereby resign from all other posts which I hold at present. Please note that I withdraw myself as the authorised signatory of All India Trinamool Congress and all other related organisations in respect of the accounts maintained in various banks. I also withdraw myself from being your authorised person before the Election Commission of India.”
- After her resignation from all Trinamool Congress posts, Chandrima said that the trust and confidence party once shown in her had weakened that made it difficult for her to continue working within the party. She added that Mamata Banerjee accused her of allowing a rebel group of TMC MLAs to enter the party headquarter, Trinamool Bhavan, where they reportedly changed the locks and took control of the office. In the interview, she said,
Yesterday, after the incident occurred, Mamata ji told me that I handed over Trinamool Bhavan to the seven or eight MLAs who went there. I felt bad about this and that’s why I resigned… I felt that the confidence she had in me and the extent to which she relied on me had been questioned. Where there is no trust, where there is no confidence, it’s not possible to work properly. This is why I have resigned.”
- Soon after resigning, Chandrima visited the West Bengal Assembly and met rebel group of TMC MLAs. led by Ritabrata Banerjee.
