  • Madan Mitra was born into an aristocratic family.
  • He grew up in a traditional, landowning, and business family of Bhawanipore, South Kolkata, India.
  • After completing his formal education, he worked in the transport business of his family for some time and drove taxis during this period.
  • Madan Mitra then served at the United India Insurance for some time and took voluntary retirement in 2004.
  • In 1973, he was selected as the president of the students’ union at Ashutosh College in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • He then entered politics and became the president of the Indian Youth Congress in South Kolkata.
  • Initially, Madan Mitra became a part of the Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi group.
  • He was reportedly a close associate of then Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who helped him to get high positions in the Indian Youth Congress.

  • In 2012, Madan Mitra was criticised for his remarks, questioning the character of Suzette Jordan, the Park Street rape survivor. He questioned her character for being with strangers at 2 a.m.
  • On 13 December 2014, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him for his involvement in the Saradha Group financial scam.
  • After his arrest, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee claimed in the media that his arrest was an act of political revenge by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
  • When Madan Mitra was in jail, he complained that he was not feeling well. After that, he was admitted to a hospital in November 2015.

  • On 17 May 2021, the CBI arrested Madan Mitra in connection with the Narada sting case.
  • The other people who were arrested along with him were minister Subrata Mukherjee, minister Firhad Hakim, and former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee. On 28 May 2021, he was granted bail.
  • In August 2023, Madan Mitra made his acting debut with the film Oh! Lovely, which was directed by Haranath Chakraborty.

  • After the election results, the party split and became known as the 2026 All India Trinamool Congress split.
  • Madan Mitra remained with the original Trinamool Congress until 15 July 2026.
  • On 12 June 2026, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided seven properties linked to Mitra in a money laundering case. Reportedly, all these properties were related to the alleged municipality recruitment scam.
  • The ED claimed that during investigation it found that Madan Mitra accepted cash and gold as bribes during municipal recruitment. ED added that many candidates who were not deserving the seats were selected. he broke many rules during the recruitment process.
  • The agency also claimed that it recovered cash and important documents under his bed at his home. They also found many undisclosed bank accounts linked to him.
  • On 15 July 2026, Madan Mitra joined the rebel TMC group, which was led by Ritabrata Banerjee, a Leader of the Opposition. He resigned from all his organizational positions in the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

  • During a media talk, he claimed that the internal dominance of Abhishek Banerjee within the party was the main reason for his resignation. After that, he continued working as an independent/rebel MLA.
