Some Lesser Known Facts About Darline Graham

• Darlene Graham was born in Central, South Carolina.

• Her parents owned the Sanitary Cafe, which offered a combination of restaurant, bar, liquor store and pool hall.

• The family was housed behind the business and it was never smooth sailing for them from early childhood.

• At the age of 11, Graham’s mother passed away from cancer.

• Her father died 15 months later of a heart attack.

• She was orphaned at a very young age, and her brother Lindsey Graham was her support.

• He sent her to live with an aunt and an uncle in Seneca, South Carolina.

• Lindsey was nine years older than her, and later entered the Air Force.

• He also introduced her to the spelling of her name as “Darline” and she has always used this spelling.

• She was featured in a TV ad for Lindsey’s Senate bid in 2002. Giving him encouragement thereafter in his political career.

• As of 2008, she worked for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

• At the same time, she assisted in establishing a program which enabled adults with severe disabilities to work from home, along with Time Warner on it.

• When Lindsey ran again for a second term in the Senate in 2014, Graham again spoke of his childhood in support of his campaign.

• Then, during his bid for the Presidency in 2016, she was with him throughout, introducing him in his first speech.

• In 2019, she was appointed to become the Commissioner and Agency Head of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, the agency that oversees the services for the blind and low vision in South Carolina.

• Along with this, she also served on the South Carolina State Workforce Development Board and its SC Works Management Committee.

• In 2026, she was again an active public speaker during Lindsey’s 2026 campaign.

• She was selected to lead the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind that same year, with term beginning in January 2027.

• Shortly after Lindsey’s tragic and unexpected passing, South Carolina senator Tim Scott spoke with Graham on 11 July 2026.

• On 13 July, two days later, President Donald Trump publicly endorsed her to fill in the Senate seat and Governor Henry McMaster appointed her the same day.

• She was sworn in as senator on 14 July 2026.

• She was the first female South Carolina Senator, and the first sibling to fill a seat left vacant by a deceased Senator in the United States Senate.

• Graham has yet to say if she will run in the upcoming election for a full four-year term.

• She now resides with her husband, Larry Nordone, in Lexington, South Carolina with their two daughters.
