Some Lesser Known Facts About Dhiraj Seth

• Dhiraj Seth grew up in a family with a long tradition of military service.

• During his studies at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, Dhiraj Seth was named the best all-round student of his course in 2006.

• During his training period, he won the Silver Centurion award in the Young Officers Course.

• After that, Dhiraj Seth stood first in the order of merit in many military courses, including the Junior Command Course.

• On 20 December 1986, he was appointed to the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) from the Indian Military Academy.

• During a military career of more than 30 years, Dhiraj Seth served in many important command, staff, and training roles.

•  He has served the Skinner’s Horse regiment.

• Dhiraj Seth has also served as the head of the 98 Armoured Brigade and later served as the General Officer Commanding of Uniform Force in Jammu and Kashmir.

• During his career, he held many important staff appointments. He served as the Brigade Major of an independent Armoured Brigade.

• He later worked as the Assistant Military Secretary in the Military Secretary’s Branch.

• Dhiraj Seth has also served as the Brigadier General Staff (Operations) at the South Western Command.

• After that, he was appointed as the Brigadier for Perspective Plans in the Strategic Planning Directorate.

• He has also served as the Additional Director General for Weapons and Equipment.

• In 1995, Dhiraj Seth started working with the United Nations Angola Verification Mission III as an Operations Officer. This mission was part of the United Nations’ efforts to help maintain peace in Angola. He served in the position till 1996.

• He has also served as a military instructor for many years.

• Dhiraj Seth has served as an Instructor and Assistant Adjutant at the National Defence Academy (NDA).

• Later, he was appointed as an Instructor at the School of Armoured Warfare in Ahmednagar, where he trained future Army officers.

• When he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, Dhiraj Seth was given the responsibility as the Director General (Discipline, Ceremonial and Welfare) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

• In the above role, he looked after matters related to discipline, military ceremonies, and the welfare of Army personnel.

• On 31 July 2021, Dhiraj Seth was appointed as the General Officer Commanding of the XXI Corps, one of the Indian Army’s important strike corps.

• In August 2022, he was appointed as the General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area.

• On 1 November 2023, Dhiraj Seth became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Command. He succeeded Lieutenant General B. S. Raju, who retired on 31 October 2023.

• On 1 July 2024, he began working as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command. He succeeded Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar Singh in this position. He served in the Southern Command till 31 March 2026.

• On 1 April 2026, Dhiraj Seth was appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. He succeeded Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, who was appointed as the Army Commander of the Western Command.

• On 13 June 2026, the Government of India announced that Dhiraj Seth would be appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff.

• On 30 June 2026, Dhiraj Seth officially took charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff. He succeeded General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after serving the nation for more than 40 years.

• After his appointment, he became the third Chief of Army Staff from the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) and the seventh Chief of Army Staff from the Armoured Corps.

• After taking charge as the Army Chief of India, he shared his vision for the Indian Army through a plan called “VIJAY.”

• The plan was based on five main parts that he believed would help strengthen the Army in the future.

• Apart from being an Army officer, General Seth is a sportsman. He enjoys travelling to distant places, playing tennis and golf in his free time. Reportedly, he has performed well in both sports.

• His father, Lieutenant General Krishna Mohan Seth, retired as the Adjutant General of the Indian Army in 1997. During his career, his father commanded the XXI Strike Corps and the III Corps.

• His younger brother, Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, is a serving flag officer in the Indian Navy.
