Some Lesser Known Facts About John Nolan

• John Francis Nolan grew up in an Irish family and toured Ireland from early on in a travelling “Fit Up” company, picking up his first experience of performance on the road.

• He later studied at the Drama Centre in London, thus being one of the initial learners in that historic establishment.

• As he left the Drama Centre, he got a part as Romeo in the Richmond Theatre opposite Francesca Annis.

• He subsequently became part of the Royal Court Company and transferred to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

• He also performed at the RSC, appearing as such roles as Clitus in Julius Caesar and roles in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Indians and The Relapse, all directed by Trevor Nunn.

• His strong baritone voice and his presence on the athletic stage made him well known in his early days of career.

• However, in 1970, his television career shot him into the limelight starring in the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda, an adaptation of the George Eliot novel.

• The same year, he started playing the role of scientist Geoff Hardcastle in the BBC environmental drama Doomwatch, which he continued to play through to the first two seasons in 1970 and 1971.

• In 1973, he starred as Nick Faunt in the miniseries Shabby Tiger on ITV, and as in the film Bequest to the Nation.

• This was followed by guest appearances in series throughout the mid-1970s such as The Sweeney, The Saint and Enemy at the Door.

• During his second Romeo at Bristol Old Vic, in 1975, he married actress Kim Hartman, of Grange Hill and Allo Allo! and both were on the same cast there.

• He featured in the movie Terror in 1978, and afterwards in The World Is Full of Married Men in 1979.

• Later in 1980, he appeared in a production of A Midsummer Nights Dream as Oberon at Regents Park although that July recorded the wettest weather in history.

• In 1980-1981, he co-written and starred in a trilogy of Dostoyevsky with the Bristol New Vic company.

• Throughout his stage career, he acted in large roles in major repertory companies and national institutions.

• His Claudio in Measure for Measure at the Barbican and his Mark Antony in Julius Caesar were greatly enjoyed.

• In the case of RTE television in Ireland, he acted as Hamlet and Richard II and won the Best Actor at the Dublin Festival, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail.

• He eventually became a member of the National Theatre company led by Trevor Nunn, performing memorable roles in Troilus and Cressida, and The Merchant of Venice.

• His unique voice was used in television and radio commercials, narrations in documentaries and in inflight entertainment in airlines around the world as the voice of Discovery Channel programming.

• In 1998, he starred in the first feature film Following directed by Christopher Nolan.

• He acted as a board member of Wayne Enterprises in Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan, in 2005 and starring Christian Bale.

• In 2012, he returned to the same role of Fredericks in The Dark Knight Rises, once again directed by Christopher Nolan and co-written with Jonathan Nolan.

• He starred in the second season of the Jonathan Nolan-created CBS drama Person of Interest in 2013, as John Greer, a former MI6 agent who has led Decima Technologies and the Samaritan AI.

• He was featured in 2017 in Dunkirk directed by Christopher Nolan. His short term experience as a blind man especially attracted attention.

• His last appearance in the screen is as the Speaker of the Hall in Dune: Prophecy on Sky Atlantic at the age of 85.

• He died on 11 April 2026 at the age of 87.
