Some Lesser Known Facts About John Nolan
- John Francis Nolan grew up in an Irish family and toured Ireland from early on in a travelling “Fit Up” company, picking up his first experience of performance on the road.
- He later studied at the Drama Centre in London, thus being one of the initial learners in that historic establishment.
- As he left the Drama Centre, he got a part as Romeo in the Richmond Theatre opposite Francesca Annis.
- He subsequently became part of the Royal Court Company and transferred to the Royal Shakespeare Company.
- He also performed at the RSC, appearing as such roles as Clitus in Julius Caesar and roles in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Indians and The Relapse, all directed by Trevor Nunn.

- His strong baritone voice and his presence on the athletic stage made him well known in his early days of career.
- However, in 1970, his television career shot him into the limelight starring in the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda, an adaptation of the George Eliot novel.
- The same year, he started playing the role of scientist Geoff Hardcastle in the BBC environmental drama Doomwatch, which he continued to play through to the first two seasons in 1970 and 1971.
- In 1973, he starred as Nick Faunt in the miniseries Shabby Tiger on ITV, and as in the film Bequest to the Nation.
- This was followed by guest appearances in series throughout the mid-1970s such as The Sweeney, The Saint and Enemy at the Door.
- During his second Romeo at Bristol Old Vic, in 1975, he married actress Kim Hartman, of Grange Hill and Allo Allo! and both were on the same cast there.

- In the case of RTE television in Ireland, he acted as Hamlet and Richard II and won the Best Actor at the Dublin Festival, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail.
- He eventually became a member of the National Theatre company led by Trevor Nunn, performing memorable roles in Troilus and Cressida, and The Merchant of Venice.
