Some Lesser Known Facts About Yumnam Khemchand Singh
- When he was 19 years old, he started learning Taekwondo.
- In 2002, he started working as a political activist with the Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party (DRPP) in Manipur.
- In 2012, he contested the Manipur Assembly election on the ticket of All India Trinamool Congress, but he lost to his opponent from the Indian National Congress.
- In 2013, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In 2017, during the Manipur Assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 21 seats out of 60. Khemchand won from the Singjamei constituency in Manipur.
BJP did not receive a full majority but formed the government with help from the National People’s Party, the Naga People’s Front, and other small parties.
During the formation of the BJP government in Manipur, eight Indian National Congress MLAs supported the BJP. Reportedly, Khemchand, as the speaker of the assembly, did not decide on the disqualification cases against them under the anti-defection law.
In March 2020, Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh, one of the eight Indian National Congress MLAs who supported the BJP, was disqualified by a Supreme Court order.
After that, before the election for a Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur, the High Court banned the seven MLAs from the assembly and ordered the Speaker to give a report on their status.
Khemchand then disqualified the four who returned to the Indian National Congress and permitted the remaining three, who joined the BJP, to enter the assembly.
- In 2022, during the Manipur Legislative Assembly election, the BJP won 32 seats with a majority.
- Khemchand was one of the contenders for the chief minister’s post, but N. Biren Singh was appointed as the chief minister of Manipur.
- Khemchand became a cabinet minister in Biren Singh’s second government.

- He was given the responsibility of three departments as his portfolio, i.e. Municipal Administration and Housing Development, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, and Education.
In May 2023, when violence started in Manipur, the central government called Manipur cabinet ministers, including Khemchand, to Delhi.
In October 2023, reportedly, some unknown attackers threw a grenade at his house gate. In the attack, a CRPF policeman and one of Khemchand’s relatives were hurt.
In June 2024, a women’s group from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity entered his house. They wanted to know about his perspective on the state’s problem. After that, Khemchand announced that he was ready to hold discussions between the fighting groups.
- In October 2024, the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul, South Korea, awarded him a 5th-Dan Black Belt in traditional Taekwondo. He then became the first person in India to get 5th Dan in traditional Taekwondo.

On 13 February 2025, Khemchand stopped working as a Speaker when the assembly was suspended, and President’s rule was imposed in Manipur.
On 8 December 2025, he was the first BJP MLA from the Meitei community to visit two Kuki villages in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since the 2023 violence began in Manipur.

On 4 February 2026, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Manipur after the President’s rule ended in the state.
